As part of plans to challenge Amazon Prime Video, Flipkart is now setting up their own streaming service. The Flipkart owned video streaming service will be named ‘Flipkart Videos’. Moreover, if everything goes well the free video streaming service might launch before the end of this year. Flipkart’s CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy has confirmed the plans as well as the name of the service. He has further revealed that the service will provide free movies, TV shows, and other entertainment programs in India. Krishnamurthy said,
We believe that great content, if made available to a wider base of consumers, especially the ones who are new to e-commerce but not internet, can bring them on-board on an everyday basis and help take away any anxiety that they may have towards online shopping.
One big difference between Amazon Prime Videos and Flipkart Videos will be that unlike Amazon’s service Flipkart will not be producing their own TV shows or other original contents, at least for now. They will more likely focus on licensing content from various sources like Balaji Telefilms, Walt Disney, etc. However, Flipkart can produce their own content in the future if everything goes well.
For now, it appears the company will only publish movies and TV shows in the Hindi language. It is not yet clear if there will be contents in other Indian languages. There is no specific information on when the service might launch for the public. However, Flipkart may probably launch the Flipkart Videos service as early as next month, just ahead of the festive season in the country.
Not every information is clear about the service right now. It will be interesting to see how the service competes against Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and other contenders like Alt Balaji. Will you use the Flipkart Videos? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
