PM Modi declares India open defecation free! – A reality check of the claim

Last Updated on by

Speaking at Sabarmati Riverfront on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, PM Narendra Modi declared India open defecation free. He reflected that How the last 60 months of his tenure has made it possible to get rid of this long lying issue.

However, this claim has raised the eyebrows of many people. We are not questioning the efforts of the government. The Swachh Bharat Mission has uplifted the lives of many people in India. But, there is still a long way to go before we become open defecation free.

India open defecation free – What is the Ground Reality?

PM Modi earlier said on Wednesday,

“India amazed the world by building 11 crore toilets for 60 crore people within 60 months.”

However, defending the statement of PM, the secretary of Jal Shakti Ministry Parameswaran Iyer said,

“Swachh Bharat revolution has been able to bring 550 million people out of open defecation habits. The use of toilets has gone up by 90 percent, but it is a dynamic process.”

Hence, the areas which are still remaining must give a shout out and get the toilets to make India really open defecation free.

As per the various surveys from News Agencies, people in villages across still defecate in open due to lack of toilets.

Speaking on the issue, Bezwada Wilson from Safai Karamchari Andolan reflects,

“India has around 90 lakh homeless people, how can they have homes? How can India be open defecation free? Soon, they will declare these homeless people criminal for defecating in open, when they don’t even have a choice”

Declaring India ODF is a moment of pride for us. However, this is a continuous process and requires awareness among people. Without people’s support, no government policy will become successful.
